Living more sustainably doesn’t have to mean overhauling your whole life. In fact, the changes that last tend to be the small, practical ones that slot neatly into a routine you already have. Here are five simple habits to try, with no pressure to do them all at once.
1. Make a reusable bag your default
Since England introduced a charge for single-use carrier bags, many of us have got into the habit of carrying our own. The trick is making it automatic. Keep a folded tote in your bag, rucksack or car, and hang another by the front door so you see it on the way out.
Remember that a reusable bag only pays off if you actually reuse it. Rather than collecting lots of bags, choose one or two you like and use them for everything from the weekly shop to library trips. Our Everyday Cotton Tote folds small and carries up to 10 kg.
2. Refill instead of rebuying
A refillable water bottle is one of the easiest swaps you can make. UK tap water is safe to drink, and many cafés, stations and public buildings now offer free refills, so you rarely need to buy bottled water on the go.
Pick a bottle you’ll enjoy carrying. An insulated design such as our Reusable Water Bottle keeps drinks cold in summer and hot in winter, so you can use it all year round.
3. Look twice at packaging
Before you put something in your basket, take a second to look at how it’s packaged. Could you buy loose fruit and vegetables rather than pre-packed? Is there a larger size that would mean less packaging overall? Is the packaging easy to recycle where you live?
You don’t need to be perfect. The aim is simply to notice packaging and choose the lower-waste option when it’s convenient.
4. Give everyday items a second life
Before throwing something away, ask whether it could be used again. Glass jars make excellent storage for dry food, cotton bags can become laundry or toy bags, and old T-shirts make great cleaning cloths. Reuse is often better than recycling because it keeps an item in use without needing energy to reprocess it.
5. Buy less, but choose well
Perhaps the most sustainable habit of all is buying only what you need. When you do buy, choose items that are durable, easy to care for and genuinely useful. A well-made product that lasts for years will usually serve you, and the planet, better than several cheaper ones that need replacing.
Start with one change
Pick the habit that feels easiest and stick with it for a couple of weeks. Once it’s second nature, add another. Small changes, repeated every day, really do add up.
