A Beginner’s Guide to Reusable Personal-Care Products

Your bathroom cabinet is a great place to start building more sustainable habits. Many everyday personal-care items are used once and thrown away, and there are now plenty of reusable or longer-lasting alternatives. This guide will help you decide which swaps suit you, how to look after them and what to check before you buy.

Common swaps to consider

  • Toothbrushes: bamboo-handled brushes are a popular alternative to all-plastic toothbrushes. Most still have nylon bristles, so check how to dispose of them properly. Our Bamboo Toothbrush includes simple disposal guidance.
  • Cotton pads: washable cotton or bamboo-fabric pads can replace disposable rounds for removing make-up or applying toner.
  • Soap and shampoo bars: solid bars often come with little or no plastic packaging and can last a long time if kept dry between uses.
  • Hair brushes and combs: wooden or bamboo versions are durable and easy to care for.
  • Razors: a reusable razor with replaceable blades can replace disposable razors.

What to check before you buy

  1. Materials: what is each part made from? Product listings should tell you clearly. If they don’t, ask.
  2. Care instructions: how is it cleaned, and how often? Make sure the routine suits you.
  3. Lifespan: how long will it last, and which parts need replacing?
  4. End of life: can it be composted, recycled or reused? Are there parts that need separating first?
  5. Real need: will you use it regularly? A reusable product is only better if it replaces something you’d otherwise buy again and again.

Caring for reusable products

Good care makes reusable products last longer and keeps them hygienic:

  • Rinse bamboo items after use and let them dry upright in a ventilated place.
  • Wash reusable pads in a mesh laundry bag so they don’t get lost in the machine.
  • Keep soap and shampoo bars on a draining dish so they don’t go soft.
  • Replace items when they show signs of wear. For toothbrushes, that’s about every three months.

Be wary of vague claims

Terms such as “eco-friendly” or “natural” can mean very different things. Look for specific information instead: materials, where something is made, how to dispose of it and any independent certifications. At EcoGlow, we aim to give you clear, product-specific details rather than broad environmental claims.

Take it one product at a time

There’s no need to replace everything at once; using up what you already have is the most sustainable option. When something runs out or wears out, consider a reusable alternative. Over time, those small swaps add up to a lighter, simpler routine.
